Birmingham City have secured a crucial agreement with Premier League champions Liverpool regarding the future of loanee Lewis Koumas. The two clubs have decided to extend the window in which Liverpool can exercise a recall clause for the young winger.
Agreement Reached After Player's Improved Form
The original deadline for a recall decision was set for January 15. However, due to Koumas's recent involvement in the first team and an injury to fellow winger Demarai Gray, a new arrangement has been made. This provides more time for all parties to assess the situation.
Blues manager Chris Davies confirmed the development to BirminghamLive, stating, "We have extended that loan recall window. He's playing and doing well." Davies emphasised that discussions with Liverpool have been positive and that everyone is currently content with the player's progress at St Andrew's.
Koumas Set for Key Championship Run
As a result of this extension, Lewis Koumas is now likely to feature in at least Birmingham's next two Championship fixtures. These are against Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday. There is also a strong possibility he will be available for the match against Stoke City on January 24 before any final decision is reached.
Davies outlined the collective thinking: "Right now, as we speak, he has just been in the team for two games in a row, got a goal and done well. I think all parties see it as let's let him focus on the next few matches and see where it goes from there."
Manager's Praise and Future Considerations
The Birmingham boss was full of praise for Koumas's attitude and recent contributions. He highlighted the player's honesty and described him as potentially the squad's quickest player, noting his valuable intensity and pressing ability. Davies pointed to Koumas's goal in the massive game against Coventry City as a potential turning point.
"You only need a moment to ignite and change your time at a club," Davies said, "and hopefully that's it for him."
However, the manager also acknowledged that the club's own transfer activity before the window closes will influence the final outcome. Birmingham remain eager to strengthen in wide areas, which could increase competition for places if Koumas stays beyond the extended assessment period.
For now, the immediate plan is clear. Lewis Koumas will continue his development with Birmingham City, offering his pace and direct running in several crucial upcoming matches, while Liverpool retain the option to bring him back to Anfield at a later date.
