Blackpool boxer Thomas Varey has claimed the Commonwealth International super lightweight title after a unanimous points victory over Welsh opponent Rashid Omar in an eight-round contest at Bolton's Toughsheet Stadium.
Fight Breakdown
According to Varey's coach Andy Abrol, the opening round saw both fighters cautiously probing each other. However, a decisive early attack from Varey put Omar on the defensive for the remainder of the bout. Abrol stated: "The first meaningful attack from Thomas put Omar on the back foot which is where he stayed for the duration of the fight."
Varey demonstrated superior sharpness and skill, forcing Omar to focus primarily on defense. As the rounds progressed, Varey increased his pace and pressure, sending his opponent to the canvas twice in the final round, with Omar being saved by the bell on both occasions.
Undefeated Record
Turning 21 in April, Varey remains undefeated in 13 professional bouts since turning professional in 2023 at age 18. Four of those victories have come by stoppage. His amateur career, which began at age eight, saw him win 50 of 55 bouts, including a European amateur championship and four national titles along with six box cup championships.
Self-Critique and Future Plans
Despite his victory, Varey was critical of his performance, admitting: "This was my longest bout to date. I was a bit slow off the mark to be truthful and not sufficiently quick to implement Andy's advice." However, he expressed delight at winning the title and looks forward to defending it in September, potentially at Blackpool's Winter Gardens. He also hinted at stepping up to ten-round bouts when his coach deems him ready and opportunities arise.
