Blues Target Romeo Amane 'Makes Football Look Easy'

The summer transfer window is open, pre-season has begun, and Birmingham City are starting to be linked with new players. Blues are one of the Championship teams reportedly interested in signing Romeo Amane from Rapid Wien.

Interest in Amane

According to journalist Pete O’Rourke, Birmingham City, Wrexham, and Sheffield United have all been linked with the Ivorian midfielder. Danish side FC Copenhagen, who recently appointed former Blues academy chief Kristjaan Speakman as their director of football, have reportedly made a bid for Amane. Humzah Mudhir provides the lowdown on the player and what he would bring to Blues.

Background

Amane spent most of his youth career in the Ivory Coast with ASEC Mimosas. He left at age 18 to join BK Hacken in Sweden in 2021, where he made his senior debut. The midfielder debuted in the Swedish top flight against IFK Goteborg and was part of the squad that won the Allsvenskan that season.

His performances in his first season led to him becoming a first-team regular for Hacken in 2023, starting 21 times in the league and featuring heavily in their Europa League campaign. He impressed in 34 games in 2024 and was identified as one of the team's strongest performers, earning him a move to Rapid Wien the following year.

Due to joining in January, Amane had limited impact for Rapid Wien in 2024/25, playing only 13 times. However, in the 2025/26 season, the 23-year-old became a key player. His interceptions and passing ability added a strong presence in midfield. Amane played 49 times last season, scoring one goal and providing four assists.

Style of Play

Amane mostly plays as a deep-lying midfielder for Rapid Wien. He is not the most physical defensive midfielder but has a strong ability to read the game. He excels at winning the ball high up the pitch and blocking passing lines to limit the opposition's effectiveness in possession.

Technically strong, Amane is comfortable receiving the ball from defence during build-up play and finding attacking teammates. He is also capable of advancing through the thirds with the ball. His style appears well-suited to English football, which likely explains the interest from Championship clubs.

‘He Makes Football Look Easy’

BK Hacken sporting director Martin Ericcson, who brought Amane to Europe before selling him to Rapid Wien, said: “Already when he arrived, you could see his qualities. He makes football look easy and has enormous skill that has continued to blossom.

“Romeo has been with the club for three years. You know BK Häcken isn't the final destination for this type of player. Now the timing was right, and he gets to take a step he is happy with. It's a good deal for everyone.”
