Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has described Aston Villa manager Unai Emery as "a very good coach" amid persistent links to the Spanish giants. Emery is reportedly high on Real Madrid's shortlist to become the new manager at the Santiago Bernabeu, with current boss Alvaro Arbeloa widely expected to depart this summer.
Calderon's Assessment of Emery
Speaking to talkSPORT's The S* Word, Calderon acknowledged Emery's qualities but also highlighted the unique pressures of managing Real Madrid. "He's a very good coach, but there are many," Calderon said. "And not all of them are going to be fit for coaching Real Madrid. It's a very difficult team. When you come here, you feel that."
Calderon, who served as Real Madrid president from 2006 to 2009, elaborated on the intense expectations at the club. "I've noticed that with many, many top players who have come here and noticed the pressure they have in a club where to win is not a success, it's an obligation. That is, in my opinion, the problem for any coach. He must be able to accept the pressure he is going to have here. Unai has proven to be a very good coach, so why not?"
Emery's Credentials
Unai Emery has built a strong reputation in European football, notably winning the Europa League multiple times with Sevilla and Villarreal, and guiding Aston Villa to impressive Premier League performances. His tactical acumen and ability to develop teams have made him a sought-after candidate for top clubs.
The speculation comes as Real Madrid prepare for a potential managerial change, with Arbeloa's tenure appearing to be in its final stages. Emery's name has been prominently mentioned alongside other candidates, though no official approach has been confirmed.
