Chris Davies Defends James Beadle with Full Support After Middlesbrough Loss
Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has firmly backed goalkeeper James Beadle in the wake of a difficult performance during the team's 3-1 defeat to Middlesbrough on Monday evening. Despite calls from some fans to recall Ryan Allsop, Davies expressed his unwavering confidence in the young shot-stopper.
Beadle's Challenging Night on the Pitch
James Beadle, who has been Birmingham City's primary goalkeeper for most of the season, faced adversity throughout the match. In the first half, he collided with teammate Jonathan Panzo and sustained a swelling over his eye, contributing to an erratic display. The team's struggles to play through Middlesbrough's press, often starting with Beadle, left their performance on shaky ground and ultimately led to the loss.
This has not been the first time this season that Beadle has faced criticism from sections of the Blues' support, with many advocating for Ryan Allsop to start in the upcoming fixture against Charlton Athletic. However, Davies chose to shift focus away from individual blame.
Davies' Strong Words of Encouragement
In his post-match comments, Davies highlighted the positive aspects of Beadle's experience. "It was a night that will serve James well because he had to deal with real adversity for a spell in that game," he stated. "James is a young goalkeeper with huge promise and he’s come here to impact this season and develop. He will have done that, whatever happens at the end of the season. He’s an exceptional goalkeeper."
Davies also pointed to broader team issues, noting that the players' support for Beadle was evident, but the overall gameplay did not help his situation. "You could see the way the other players were supporting him and the way the team was playing wasn’t helping him. We were giving him the ball too much, not making good enough angles, and everything else like that," he explained.
Focus on Development and Future Potential
Emphasizing Beadle's youth and growth, Davies added, "You can make too much of these things. There was so much that we could have done better. James has got my complete support. I always speak to them and support them. Absolutely. No doubt about that." He reminded everyone that Beadle is only 21 years old, which is particularly young for a goalkeeper, yet he has accumulated significant experience and is highly regarded.
"He’s seen in the international set-up as someone who can keep going on that pathway. That tells you what people think of him," Davies continued. "I do think he’s improved. He’s had to battle for his place this season and I was clear with that when he came in because Ryan Allsop had done so well for me. James had to fight for his position but he did it and I think he’s had a good season, absolutely."
As Birmingham City prepares for their next match, the debate over who should start in goal continues among fans, but Davies' stance is clear: James Beadle retains his full backing and is viewed as a key part of the team's future.
