Chris Davies, the manager of Birmingham City, has described August Priske's first goal for the club as the 'icing on the cake' following a positive start to his Blues career. Priske scored his debut goal in the final match of the season, a 1-1 draw against Portsmouth at Fratton Park.
Priske's Breakthrough Goal
The Danish striker, who joined Birmingham City for a fee of £6 million in January, netted with a powerful header from a Kai Wagner corner in the 19th minute. This came after Adrian Segecic had given Portsmouth an early lead. Priske's goal ensured the points were shared, and Birmingham City finished 10th in the Championship in their first season back in the division.
Davies expressed his delight for the striker, saying: 'He heads, he presses, he works hard, and then you say score a goal, and that's the icing on the cake. You can see the leap that he's got. He's big anyway, but he gets up really well. It's a good technical header. He gets in good space in the box, and it's a good delivery. Set pieces are huge, and he's finished the season incredibly well. He lasts the game in the way he presses, and now he's got his goal. That's what you need from the strikers.'
Second Half Dominance but No Winner
Birmingham City were the aggressors in the second half at Fratton Park, but they could not find a winning goal. The match saw a flashpoint when Segecic attempted to score while the Blues believed the ball was theirs after play had been stopped to allow Christoph Klarer to receive treatment. Goalkeeper James Beadle reacted angrily by shoving Segecic, leading to a melee that resulted in both managers, Davies and John Mousinho, being booked.
Reacting to the incident, Davies said: 'You can't do that. That's wrong. They say we left the ball, but if it had gone in, there would have been uproar, and rightly so. If one of my players did that, I would be criticising him and saying he shouldn't do that. That's not in the spirit of the game. Thankfully, we're not having to talk about it too much.'
The draw concluded Birmingham City's season, with the team securing a mid-table finish in their return to the Championship.
