Unai Emery: Aston Villa Players Don't Need Reminder Ahead of Wolves Clash
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has declared that his players do not require any reminder to avoid complacency as they prepare to face Premier League bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night. The Spanish tactician is seeking his first victory at Molineux and emphasized the inherent motivation within his squad.
Historical Context and Current Form
Villa have secured three wins in their last four Premier League encounters with Wolves, matching their total from the previous fifteen meetings. A victory would complete the Premier League double over their rivals for the first time since the 2003–04 season, adding significant historical weight to the fixture.
Despite being all but relegated, Wolves have demonstrated a slight improvement in form under manager Rob Edwards. However, they have managed only one league win throughout the entire season, though they notably fought back from a two-goal deficit to draw 2–2 with Arsenal last week.
Emery's Personal Experience and Warnings
Emery drew upon his own challenging history against Wolves, revealing a poor personal record at Molineux. "I think they don't need it (a reminder). They know how much we will play tomorrow, how difficult the match we are going to play tomorrow," Emery stated.
He elaborated on his past struggles: "We are here together three years and a half. We drew one match against them, and we lost two matches against them. Three matches we played here together, we lost. And I played even seven or eight years ago, and I lost, and I was losing 3-0 in 30 minutes. My experience was so, so poor experience there."
Crucial Stakes in the Premier League Race
This match holds immense importance for Aston Villa's season ambitions. A win could provide a nine-point cushion inside the top five before they host Chelsea next week. Meanwhile, Chelsea face a challenging away fixture against Arsenal on Sunday, potentially affecting the standings.
Emery acknowledged the intense pressure from chasing teams: "I know it's going to be very, very difficult to keep our position. Why? Because we have three teams behind us: United, Chelsea and Liverpool. Our position for them is their objective, their priority and their challenge, and they have the power to get us."
Team Motivation and Future Focus
The Villa manager outlined his primary message to the squad, focusing on enjoyment and daily preparation. "Of course, our challenge is to try to keep the advantage we have now, and try to play looking forward, and tomorrow, three points, no more. Enjoy the way. This is the first message. We must enjoy the way we are doing," he emphasized.
Emery expressed high motivation for the upcoming challenges, including both Premier League and Europa League commitments. "And each day is something we must enjoy, practicing and preparing games, focusing on the next match. And, of course, we are going to face, we are going to fight, day by day, next week, next month, very exciting moments. Everything can happen, but exciting moments."
He concluded with a rallying cry: "Premier League, Europa League, we are so, so motivated. We are in day 28, Premier League, tomorrow, playing. We played 27 matches, everything we did is done, and now, how we are performing, how we are getting individual and collective performance, how we are showing our energy, our wishes, and how we can share with our supporters, I am so, so motivated for the next match tomorrow, and for the next matches after tomorrow."
