Former Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United, keeping him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2025. The 40-year-old shot-stopper, who came through the ranks at Manchester United's academy, has extended his stay with the Premier League giants.
Heaton's Career Journey
Heaton began his career at Manchester United but never made a first-team appearance for the club before moving on to various clubs including Cardiff City, Bristol City, and Burnley. He joined Aston Villa in 2019 and made 20 appearances for the Villans before returning to Manchester United in 2021 as a backup goalkeeper.
Role at Manchester United
Since returning to Old Trafford, Heaton has served as a reliable third-choice goalkeeper, providing experienced cover behind first-choice Andre Onana and deputy Altay Bayindir. He has made one appearance for Manchester United this season, playing in the Carabao Cup tie against Crystal Palace in September 2023.
Heaton's new contract highlights his importance to the squad as a senior professional and mentor to younger goalkeepers. The former England international, who has three caps for his country, expressed his delight at extending his stay with the club.
"I'm thrilled to continue my journey with Manchester United," Heaton said. "This is a special club, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to keep contributing both on and off the pitch."
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised Heaton's professionalism and influence in the dressing room. "Tom is a fantastic professional and a great character to have around the squad. His experience and leadership are invaluable," ten Hag commented.
Heaton's new deal ensures that Manchester United retain experienced cover in goal as they compete on multiple fronts next season. The club has also been linked with potential additions to their goalkeeping department, but Heaton's presence provides stability.
