Sam Cosgrove, the striker who failed to score for Birmingham City after a £2 million move from Aberdeen, has resurrected his career by firing Auckland FC to their first A-League title.
From Blues Flop to A-League Hero
Cosgrove was signed in January 2021 by then-manager Aitor Karanka and technical director Xuandong Ren, but he managed just two Championship starts before being loaned out. After spells in League One with Shrewsbury Town, AFC Wimbledon, and Plymouth Argyle, he joined Barnsley permanently in 2023. However, his struggles continued, and he was released last year.
Now 29, Cosgrove joined newly-formed Auckland FC and has been the A-League's top scorer with 11 goals, helping the club win the championship in only their second season.
Career Revival Down Under
Speaking after the grand final victory over Sydney FC, Cosgrove said: "Nine months ago, I never would have envisaged this. I was sat on my a*** in England, not knowing where my career was going to take me, and these guys come out of nowhere. This is incredible, this is one of the best moments of my career."
His journey mirrors that of Kyogo Furuhashi, another striker who struggled in the Championship after prolific spells in Scotland, though Cosgrove's redemption story has taken him to New Zealand.
