Former West Brom defender Darnell Furlong has expressed his confidence that Albion would avoid relegation, ahead of his return to The Hawthorns with Ipswich Town this Saturday. The 30-year-old full-back, who was sold to the Tractor Boys for £4 million last summer, played 247 times for the Baggies over six years after joining from Queens Park Rangers in 2019.
Furlong's Time at West Brom
The son of former striker Paul Furlong, Darnell was a mainstay in the Albion defence for the majority of his tenure. His departure came as a surprise last summer when West Brom offloaded him to Ipswich to address Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) concerns. Since the move, Furlong has been a key figure for Ipswich, starting 37 league games this season.
Ipswich's Promotion Push
Ipswich head into the final two fixtures level on 39 points with Millwall, though they hold a game in hand over the London club. With promotion still within reach, Furlong is focused on securing three points against his former side.
Furlong's View on Albion's Survival
West Brom secured their Championship status with a victory over Watford on Tuesday night, pending any potential points deductions for alleged financial breaches. Furlong admitted he always believed they would pull through. “It'll be nice to see some people there. It'll be strange going there as the away team, but I've done it before when I was at West Brom and went to QPR. We'll be going for the three points but it's nice to see them safe - I knew they'd get out, I knew they had the quality it was just a case of a bit of confidence - I'm happy for them but focused on us.”
The match promises an emotional reunion for Furlong and fellow former Baggie Cedric Kipre, as Ipswich aim to boost their promotion bid.
