How Hanif Mohammad Inspired Dudley Council's Annual Charity Cricket Match
Hanif Mohammad Inspired Dudley Charity Cricket Match

Dudley Council's annual charity cricket match, which sees elected councillors take on council officers, was inspired by a world record holder known as the original 'Little Master' — Pakistan cricket legend Hanif Mohammad.

Cllr Mohammed Hanif, who has organised the fixture since his election in 2007, explained how the event began after a conversation at Stourbridge Cricket Club. “The conversation just started from there, they were looking for funding from the council to help them do different projects, I said it would be good to play the Stourbridge Club as hosts,” he said.

From a Single Game to an Annual Tradition

The first match featured councillors and Stourbridge players. It later evolved into an annual inter-council clash to raise money for good causes. Now, councillors and officers pay £10 each to play, with additional funds raised through raffles and an auction.

Cllr Hanif noted that officers usually win the fixture, but this year the councillors' team will include political heavyweights such as council leader Cllr Patrick Harley and Dudley mayor Cllr Pete Lowe.

The Inspiration: Hanif Mohammad

Hanif Mohammad played 55 test matches for Pakistan between 1952 and 1970, scoring 12 centuries with a batting average of 44. The diminutive player is best known for his 337-run innings in a 16-hour test match against the West Indies, which remains the longest innings in test cricket. He shares the title of 'Little Master' with cricketing greats Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.

Charity Match Details

This year's charity fixture will take place at Stourbridge Cricket Club's Memorial Ground in Amblecote on Friday, July 17, starting at 6pm. The event will raise money for seven charities: WeLoveCarers, Friends of Alfie Johnson, Stourbridge FC, Gig Caritas & Busking for Charity, The What? Centre, Stourbridge Glass Museum, and Brierley Hill Baby Bank.

Cllr Lowe said: “I am incredibly proud to be supporting seven charities during my mayoral year, all of which make a real difference to people and communities across the borough. Whether you're taking part, buying a raffle ticket or simply coming along to watch, every contribution will help support these organisations and the valuable work they do. We'd love to see a good crowd on the night.”
