Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes has described his goal-scoring return from a long-term injury as 'perfect', even as speculation continues to link him with a move away from Molineux.
A Dream Comeback at Molineux
The Brazilian marked his first appearance since October with a goal in Wolves' emphatic 6-1 FA Cup victory over Shrewsbury Town. Having undergone surgery for a groin injury, his comeback could not have been scripted better, contributing to his side's progression and extending their recent unbeaten run to four matches.
"It was a perfect return," Gomes beamed in an interview. He credited his teammates for the goal, stating, "Fer did a very good shot which hit the post and then Tolu found me inside the box and I was fast to react. I was very happy when the ball touched the net."
Overcoming a 'Tough Moment'
The 24-year-old opened up about the mental and physical challenge of his rehabilitation. "There's been some tough moments for me with my injury and the surgery," he admitted. He was full of praise for the club's medical staff, saying they "did everything they could" and "always pushed me" to make a swift recovery.
"It's been a difficult time to be watching from the stands, not being able to help the team," Gomes reflected. "Every player doesn't like to be injured... it's been very, very difficult and I was sad, of course. But since the first day after the surgery, I did everything in my capacity to return as fast as possible."
Future Focus Amid Transfer Speculation
Gomes' impressive return to action comes at a time when his future is a hot topic. Reports continue to link the dynamic midfielder with potential moves to Manchester United and Italian giants Napoli. However, his immediate focus remains firmly on his fitness and contributing to Wolves' cause.
"I'm feeling very good, I'm feeling sharp and feeling fit," he confirmed, while stressing the need for caution. "We need to take it step by step... I'm feeling fit and without pain, that's the most important thing."
On the team's current form, he added: "Winning games and not losing games brings happiness. I think everyone could see that on the pitch the lads are doing an amazing job now. Four games unbeaten is very good and now we need to keep working."
His committed comments and match-winning return will be welcomed by Wolves fans, even as the transfer rumours persist ahead of the summer window.
