Roy Keane Slams John McGinn as 'Pub Player', Ian Wright Fires Back
Keane Calls McGinn 'Pub Player', Wright Defends Aston Villa Star

Roy Keane has sparked controversy by branding Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn a "pub player" when he is not at his best, a comment that Arsenal legend Ian Wright was quick to dismiss.

Keane's Criticism and Praise

Speaking on a recent podcast, Keane acknowledged McGinn's importance but was scathing about his inconsistent performances. "He's one of these fellas, when he's bad, when he has his bad days, he does look like a pub player. When he's off it, he looks shocking," Keane said. However, the former Manchester United captain admitted he would still include the Scotland international in his squad without hesitation.

Wright's Defence

Ian Wright rushed to McGinn's defence, arguing that the midfielder rarely has a poor match. "He seldom has a bad game," Wright countered, prompting Keane to partially concede. Keane added: "If you watch him long enough and what the stats are, when he's in the team week in, week out, if these managers all like him... You'd have him in your group, absolutely and it's no surprise Villa are doing well. He's at the forefront of that."

McGinn's Journey at Aston Villa

McGinn, who joined Villa from Hibernian for just £2.75 million nearly eight years ago under Steve Bruce, has been instrumental in the club's rise. He scored the decisive goal in the 2019 Championship play-off final at Wembley and has since helped Villa win the Europa League and secure Champions League qualification. The 30-year-old also played a key role in Scotland's qualification for Euro 2020, Euro 2024, and the upcoming World Cup Finals in North America.

Keane's Recent Comments on Other Players

This is not the first time Keane has made headlines for his frank assessments. He recently revealed that Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes called him after being criticized on the same podcast. Keane's no-nonsense style continues to divide opinion, but his latest remarks about McGinn have reignited debate about the Villa star's consistency.
