Ezri Konsa completes 'special' Aston Villa legacy before Arsenal move
Konsa's 'special' Villa legacy before Arsenal transfer

Ezri Konsa has completed his Aston Villa chapter with a legacy he never imagined when he first joined, having made 284 appearances across all competitions before his move to Arsenal. The centre-back's 231 Premier League appearances place him among the club's all-time leaders in the competition, with only eight players having made more for Villa.

Legacy secured through consistent excellence

When Konsa sat down for an interview last year at Bodymoor Heath, the conversation turned to the mark he would leave on the club. At that point, he had already established himself as a key figure under Unai Emery, who took over from Steven Gerrard at the end of 2022. Despite his consistent performances, external interest had not yet matched his level of display, but the sense was that his time at Villa Park was drawing to a natural close.

Following Villa's Europa League triumph, Konsa felt his chapter with the club was complete. In that same interview, he spoke warmly about raising his young family, a topic that brought a broad smile before the chat concluded.

London return and Arsenal appeal

Having remained based in London since his move from Brentford, a transfer to a capital club was always likely to appeal after seven years at Villa. Although Konsa grew up as a Tottenham Hotspur supporter, he was never going to turn down Arsenal, particularly after the Gunners won the Premier League last season and reached the Champions League final.

His departure leaves Villa with a significant void in defence. Captain John McGinn has made only a couple more Premier League appearances than Konsa's 231, underscoring the defender's remarkable consistency. In the Premier League era, only one centre-back has made more appearances for Villa: Olof Mellberg, who logged 232 league matches in claret and blue.

A 'special' journey acknowledged

Reflecting on his legacy during that interview, Konsa admitted: "It's not something I have thought about when I first joined, but thinking about it now it would be special. From when I first joined to now, it has been special and the club has grown a lot. We are playing Champions League football again for the first time in a long time. I do want to leave a legacy and hopefully we can win something."

That wish was fulfilled with the Europa League trophy, and now he departs for what many consider the best team in England, even if some Villa supporters might not want to hear that assessment. He gave the club seven years of high-level performances, secured silverware, and is ready for a fresh challenge.

Timing of the transfer

With Konsa in the final two years of his Villa contract, the club was well aware that he was ready for a new experience. His market value was set to decline given that he turns 29 in just over two months' time, making the summer window the optimal moment for a sale.

The transfer fee has sparked debate among supporters, with opinions divided on whether the price was fair for a player of Konsa's standing. His departure marks the end of an era for Villa's defence, but his legacy at the club is firmly established.
