Villa Keeper's Dramatic Deadline Day Disappointment
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez experienced a crushing transfer setback this summer, missing what has been described as a 'chance in a lifetime' when his anticipated move to Manchester United dramatically collapsed. The Argentine World Cup winner looked destined for Old Trafford as the transfer window drew to a close, but the deal unravelled at the eleventh hour.
From the Brink of Exit to Villa Return
The transfer saga reached its peak on August 31, when Martinez was conspicuously left out of Aston Villa's match-day squad for their game against Crystal Palace. This omission strongly indicated that the 33-year-old had played his final game for the club. However, in a stunning turn of events, Manchester United opted to sign Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens instead, leaving Martinez's proposed transfer in tatters.
Former Aston Villa and Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given, analysing the situation, confirmed how close the move had been. "It felt very close in the window just gone past, with him not playing," Given told 10bet. "I think Villa played in a live game on deadline day, and he wasn’t in the squad. Everyone thought he was off, maybe to Manchester United, but that didn't happen."
What Next for Villa's Number One?
Despite the failed transfer, Martinez has since returned to his role as Villa's first-choice goalkeeper, making nine Premier League appearances so far this season and helping steer the club to sixth in the table. Yet, questions remain about his long-term future at Villa Park.
Given believes the opportunity for a marquee move to a club like Manchester United may have passed. "Manchester United? Probably, now that Senne Lammens has arrived and done really well," he stated. "Maybe it was a chance in a lifetime for Emi, and it’s been missed now. Unless Emi Martinez is thinking of heading to another country."
Given did, however, praise Martinez's incredible career achievements, including his legendary status in Argentina after his crucial save in the World Cup final. While his age might now deter some top clubs seeking younger options, Given was adamant: "He's still a brilliant goalkeeper, in my opinion."
