Two mothers from Newark have started a new competitive netball club aiming to challenge the region's leading teams. Laura Willis and Chelsea Morgan are the founders of Newark Roses Netball Club, which has already drawn significant interest from players across the area.
Strong turnout at trials
The club held open trials earlier this month, with more than 40 people attending—a response the founders say exceeded expectations. Selected players will compete in the Premier Division of the Nottinghamshire County League, facing teams from Nottingham, West Bridgford, and Clifton.
Passion for the sport
Both founders have played netball since school and remain passionate about the sport. Despite being involved in local clubs and social leagues, they identified a lack of opportunities for adults wanting to play competitively in Newark.
Laura Willis said: "Newark Netball Club does a great job with junior teams, but both Chelsea and I love playing and there wasn't really an opportunity for us to get involved competitively. The social leagues are great and provide a welcoming, inclusive place for teams wanting to play for fun. But from what we've seen, we believe there is untapped potential in the town. We felt we could make an impact on the competitive circuit, so we decided to set up our own club."
The strong turnout at trials highlighted growing demand for more adult netball opportunities locally.
Community support
Chelsea Morgan, a sports tutor and grassroots coach, said: "Starting the Nets85 League in Newark two years ago and watching it grow from four teams to 22, with more than 300 players, has been incredible. What really stood out was how much talent was out there, but with nowhere local to go, no qualified coaches and limited opportunities to develop. That's why Laura and I set up Newark Roses. We both knew we had to do something. Our ambition, with the support of the community, is to put Newark on the map for competitive netball."
The team trains on Wednesday evenings at Suthers School and will play weekend fixtures across Nottinghamshire.
The club aims to build a strong and competitive squad while maintaining a supportive and inclusive environment for players. Those interested can contact Laura for more information on 07725 702573.
