Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins has outlined how he plans to punish his opponents at the World Cup in Qatar, as he aims to secure a spot in Gareth Southgate's England squad. The 26-year-old, who has scored four goals in 14 appearances for Villa this season, believes his pace and movement can be key weapons against top-level defenders.
Watkins' Tactical Edge
Speaking to reporters, Watkins emphasised his ability to exploit spaces behind defensive lines. "I like to think I can cause problems with my runs in behind," he said. "If defenders aren't switched on, I can punish them. That's something I focus on in training." Watkins has been in fine form for Villa, netting four goals and providing two assists in the Premier League this campaign.
Competition for Places
Watkins faces stiff competition for a place in England's attack, with Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford, and Callum Wilson among the contenders. However, his versatility and work rate have impressed Southgate, who has given him three caps so far. "I know I have to keep performing for Villa to get the call-up," Watkins added. "The World Cup is a dream, but I need to earn it."
Impact at Club Level
Under manager Unai Emery, Watkins has refined his game, particularly in pressing and link-up play. His goal against Manchester United earlier this season showcased his clinical finishing. With 10 goals in 40 international appearances for England's youth teams, Watkins has a proven track record at various levels.
Looking Ahead
As the World Cup approaches, Watkins remains focused on his club duties. "I can't afford to look too far ahead," he said. "Every game for Villa is a chance to show what I can do. If I do that, hopefully the rest will take care of itself." England's opening match in Qatar is against Iran on November 21, and Watkins is determined to be part of the squad that travels to the Middle East.
