Thomas Tuchel singled out Morgan Rogers for praise after England’s extra-time victory over Norway secured a place in the World Cup semi-finals. The Aston Villa forward was introduced in the 89th minute, replacing club teammate Ezri Konsa, who was struggling with hamstring cramps.
Rogers' Unfamiliar Midfield Role
Interestingly, Rogers slotted into midfield alongside Manchester City’s new big-money signing Elliot Anderson, a role he has not played before. Despite that unfamiliar position, Rogers played a key role in England’s success during the second half. It was his long-range effort in extra time that led to Jude Bellingham’s winner, with former Aston Villa goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland spilling the initial shot.
Tuchel's Praise
Speaking after the win, Tuchel lavished praise on Rogers for his contribution. He explained: "We used Reece James as a right defender and put Elliot Anderson back as the six and played with Morgan Rogers on the eight and defensively as a double six. I think Morgan has had a difficult time to not play in the role that he wants and that he can play. He is one of my key players and I am so, so happy about his performance today. He made a big step forward today, like all of our substitutes, and especially for Morgan in a new position, this was absolutely top."
Implications for Aston Villa
Unai Emery often praises Rogers for his versatility and ability to play across the forward line, but perhaps his midfield cameo has now given the Villa boss another option to consider. Rogers' adaptability could prove valuable for both club and country as the season progresses.
