Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins has expressed his determination to bring a distinct set of attributes to England's squad for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. The 26-year-old striker, who has earned four caps for the Three Lions, is eager to showcase his pace, movement, and goal-scoring ability on the global stage.
Watkins Confident in His Abilities
Watkins, who has been in impressive form for Aston Villa this season, believes his style of play offers something different from England's other attacking options. “I feel like I bring something different to the team,” Watkins said in an interview. “My pace, my movement in behind, and my ability to press from the front are qualities that can unsettle defenses.”
Competition for Places
England manager Gareth Southgate has a wealth of attacking talent to choose from, including Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka, and Marcus Rashford. However, Watkins is confident he can force his way into the starting lineup. “There are so many quality players, but I’m just focused on doing my best for the team whenever I get the chance,” he added.
Watkins' Journey to the Top
The striker’s rise to prominence has been remarkable. After starting his career at Exeter City, Watkins moved to Brentford, where he scored 26 goals in the Championship during the 2019-20 season. That form earned him a move to Aston Villa in 2020, and he has since established himself as a key player in the Premier League.
World Cup Ambitions
Watkins is determined to make the most of his opportunity if selected for the World Cup squad. “It’s every boy’s dream to play in a World Cup, and I’m no different. I want to go there and make a real impact,” he said. “I know I have to be patient, but when I get my chance, I’ll be ready.”
The World Cup in Qatar is set to take place from November 20 to December 18, with England drawn in Group B alongside Iran, the USA, and Wales. Watkins will be hoping to play a key role as the Three Lions aim to go one step further than their runners-up finish at Euro 2020.
