West Bromwich Albion ended a miserable Championship campaign with a 2-1 defeat at basement boys Sheffield Wednesday. Here are some bite-sized talking points from the match at Hillsborough.
The Occasion
Saturday belonged to Sheffield Wednesday for very clear reasons as their takeover was confirmed prior to kick-off. The occasion got the better of the Baggies, and James Morrison admitted as much afterwards. The boss made a good point as he suggested having to come to Hillsborough in search of something to survive would have been tough.
Critical Morrison
Morrison, in his first game since being appointed permanently, was unhappy at his troops at both half-time and full-time. It is the first time since defeat at Oxford 11 games ago, his first match as caretaker, he has had to deliver some very firm critical words. It is not something he expects to be repeated.
Losing Streak
Albion’s job was done and there was little on the line, but nobody was more determined than Morrison to see out the season unbeaten and make it 11. It might not have meant much to the Championship table, but signing off after a limp display and poor defeat does little to lift the mood.
Draw a Line
Everybody connected with Albion will want to forget about 2025/26 as quickly as possible. It is a season that simply cannot be repeated. Morrison faces a huge job to turn things around and stressed he is keen to draw a line under the campaign - but he will have learned a lot from Hillsborough after some dreadful performances.
