Wolves have taken the decision to part company with manager Rob Edwards, despite the former Middlesbrough boss spearheading plans to revitalise the club after their relegation to the Championship. Edwards, 43, only arrived at Molineux last November after leaving Boro, where he had guided them to a strong position in the second tier. Although he could not spark a revival at Wolves—who finished 19th in the Premier League after a disastrous campaign—the hierarchy had appeared intent on backing him.
Transfer Success Not Enough
The Midlands club had already begun their summer recruitment with the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, while midfielder Andre committed his long-term future to the club. Edwards was seemingly instrumental in securing those deals. However, he has been dismissed just seven months into his tenure, according to The Telegraph, with Gil Vicente manager César Peixoto tipped to take over. The Portuguese coach has been in charge since March 2025 and has previously managed Academica, Moreirense, and Pacos Ferreira.
Puzzling Decision
Wolves' decision appears puzzling, considering Edwards had been instrumental in persuading Trippier and Jimenez to join. After signing the former Newcastle defender, Edwards indicated he would lead the club's push for an immediate return to the Premier League. He said: "We have to be up there this season, and I'd rather be there with good players! This doesn't add any more pressure, it just actually makes me feel better that we're building a squad that I've been banging on about and saying that we're going to need to do. We need to have a better and stronger squad than we had last year because we weren't able to compete well enough last year, and so we're working really hard to make sure we're competitive. Pressure is going to be there anyway because we're Wolves in the Championship after eight years of Premier League football. We know the pressure's going to be there, but I'd rather have the pressure with players like Tripps and then be able to turn around and know I've got a really good and strong group of players behind me."
O'Neil Linked with Ipswich
In a twist of fate, former Wolves manager Gary O'Neil may also be set for a change of scenery in the coming days, with speculation mounting over his potential appointment at Ipswich Town following Kieran McKenna's exit.
