If you thought previous World Cups were intense, brace yourself. This tournament is breaking records before a ball is even kicked. Co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the USA, it is the first time three nations have shared hosting duties.
It is also massive. FIFA has expanded the tournament from 32 teams to 48 teams. This means we are getting a whopping 104 matches crammed into 39 days of pure footballing madness. There are 12 groups of four teams. The top two from each group will fly through to the knockouts, but they will also be joined by the eight best third-place finishers. For the first time ever, teams will have to survive a round of 32 before even smelling the traditional round of 16.
England and Scotland in the Draw
Both England and Scotland have booked their places in the finals, meaning our summer diaries are well and truly sorted.
England (Group L): Thomas Tuchel's men find themselves grouped with Croatia, Ghana, and Panama. It is a group that offers plenty of intrigue, with that opening fixture against Croatia looking like the heavyweight clash of the group.
Scotland (Group C): Managed by Steve Clarke, the Tartan Army are bound for the Americas. Awaiting them is a dream matchup against five-time champions Brazil, balanced by potentially tricky encounters with Morocco and Haiti.
Match Schedule and Key Fixtures
Because the tournament is being held across North America, get ready for some late nights on the sofa. Kick-off times range from civilised evening slots to early-morning coffee-fuelled sessions.
The action kicks off on Thursday, June 11, in Mexico City, with the opening phase serving up some brilliant matchups. Below are the standout fixtures to keep an eye on during the initial opening weeks, including all the crucial England and Scotland games.
Opening Week
- Mexico vs South Africa: Thursday, June 11, 8pm. The big curtain-raiser at the iconic Estadio Azteca, Mexico City. With no need to qualify, hosts Mexico have focused on friendlies since their Concacaf Gold Cup over the USA in June 2025. It could be a tough night for South Africa, with an absolute cauldron of an atmosphere.
- Brazil vs Morocco: Saturday, June 13, 11pm. A brilliant late-night Saturday clash featuring the samba stars against the 2022 semi-final heroes. With more World Cup wins than any other team, Brazil will always draw a crowd, but that should not overawe a Moroccan side that lifted the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 following the controversial final against Senegal.
- Netherlands vs Japan: Sunday, June 14, 9pm. With a pre-tournament winning run stretching back six games, including wins against Brazil and England, Japan are sure to test the Dutch side under Ronald Koeman, who, despite scoring 27 goals during qualifying to top their group, fell to Algeria in a recent friendly.
- France vs Senegal: Tuesday, June 16, 8pm. The double World Cup winners, France have talent in abundance, but in the afternoon heat of the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, will they wilt against the Senegalese side who contested the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 final?
Home Nation Dates
- Haiti vs Scotland: Sunday, June 14, 2am. After 28 years, Scotland returns to the world stage. Steve Clark's team kick off against a Haiti side who put four past New Zealand just this month in their final warm-up game. Set your alarms, or simply don't go to sleep.
- England vs Croatia: Wednesday, June 17, 9pm. For the first time, Thomas Tuchel will lead the Three Lions in a tournament. Following a comprehensive qualifying campaign, hopes are high, but will hearts be broken yet again? Croatia will hope so, as this could be the game that decides who tops Group L.
- Scotland vs Morocco: Friday, June 19, 11pm. A massive Friday night fixture for Scotland that could prove pivotal for their hopes of reaching the knockouts. This is the first of two tough fixtures for the Scots, with the final game against Brazil.
- England vs Ghana: Tuesday, June 23, 9pm. A highly anticipated, vibrant clash in Boston that promises plenty of drama. This is the first time these sides have met in a competitive match, and although the Ghanaians' recent record is poor, Carlos Queiroz's team are capable of testing England's resolve.
- Scotland vs Brazil: Wednesday, June 24, 11pm. The glamour tie, and it could be all over by the time Scotland take to the field against Brazil. The last time Scotland made the finals in '98, their opening game was against Brazil.
- Panama vs England: Saturday, June 27, 10pm. England's final group stage match, and their defenders will need to be on it to the last minute against a Panama side that in 2026 has scored 22% of its goals in the final 10 minutes of its games.
