A historic Welsh rugby club has received a significant financial boost from a major national housebuilder. Ystradgynlais RFC has been awarded a £1,000 donation from Persimmon Homes West Wales, delivered through the developer's Community Champions initiative.
Supporting a Community Institution
The cheque was formally presented at the club's ground to key figures from its youth setup: captain Iestyn Lougher and vice-captains Riley Watts and Jack O'Malley-Jones. Founded in 1890, the club is a bedrock of the local area, with its First XV competing in Admiral National League 1 West Central and maintaining strong links to professional side the Ospreys.
Sharon Bouhali, Sales Director at Persimmon Homes West Wales, emphasised the company's commitment to the communities where it builds. "As a local developer focused on creating a positive legacy, we are always delighted to support local clubs, especially an institution like Ystradgynlais RFC, which we've been pleased to help in the past," she said.
Bouhali also highlighted the connection to Persimmon's nearby Maes y Rhos development, where all homes in the first phase are now sold. "We have our fingers crossed that we're building homes for future fans and players of this much-loved club," she added, noting that the company awaits planning approval for the site's second phase.
Vital Backing for Grassroots Sport
Jonathan Richards, treasurer of Ystradgynlais RFC, expressed the club's gratitude for the continued support. "We're really grateful to Persimmon for supporting the club once again through their Community Champions programme," he stated.
Richards explained the critical importance of such partnerships for community-focused sports clubs. "As a club that provides a great outlet for young people in Ystradgynlais, whether they be players or fans, it's vital we can rely on backing from local businesses to help keep the sport we love alive in the town," he said.
A Legacy of Rugby Excellence
The club boasts a proud history of developing talent, with notable former players including:
- Vernon Cooper
- Mark Bennett
- Dan Baker
Persimmon's support extends beyond the Community Champions donation, as the company is also the named shirt sponsor for the club's Youth Team. This latest £1,000 grant will directly aid the club in maintaining its facilities, supporting its youth programmes, and continuing its central role in the social and sporting fabric of Ystradgynlais.
