While many children dream of video games or cinema trips for their birthdays, Walter from Felbridge had a more ambitious vision. As he approached his 10th birthday, he simply asked, "Can we do a challenge, please?" This request has blossomed into "One Island, Two Bikes," a self-funded and self-organised charity cycle around the entire circumference of the Isle of Wight.
Brothers Tackle a Daunting Route
Joining Walter on this epic journey is his 12-year-old brother, Arthur. The siblings, who attend Halsford Park and Sackville School, have transformed their birthday adventure into a fundraising mission for two critical school projects. For Halsford Park, funds will support the 'Learning Labyrinth,' a unique space designed to enrich the educational environment for every student. At Sackville School, donations will refresh the fitness suite by replacing aging sports equipment that is currently beyond repair, ensuring all students have access to quality physical education tools.
Pushing Limits on Hilly Terrain
The brothers are no strangers to sports, but the 65-mile route presents a formidable challenge even for experienced cyclists. Known for its notoriously hilly coastal terrain, the Isle of Wight circuit features more ups and downs than a yo-yo. They will push their pedals to the limit, tackling over 18 hills and climbing more than 4,900 feet in elevation to achieve their fundraising goal. Grit and stamina, honed during rigorous training sessions, will be essential for their success.
Family Support Fuels the Effort
Walter and Arthur won't be alone on this arduous journey. Their support team is a full family affair: Dad will be pedalling right behind them, providing encouragement and companionship, while Mum and Grandad will man the support car. This dedicated crew will supply snacks, water, and much-needed moral support, especially during the steepest climbs that test their endurance.
