The Hampshire Cricket Board has unveiled an extensive schedule of completely free junior cricket programmes for the year 2026, available to young people of all ages across the county. These community-focused initiatives are specifically designed to guarantee that every child and teenager has the opportunity to engage with the sport, regardless of background or ability.
Comprehensive Free Coaching and Community Building
At the heart of these programmes is the provision of high-quality, professional coaching at no cost to participants. Beyond simply teaching cricket skills, the initiatives aim to foster welcoming and inclusive communities. These environments help young people develop essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and communication, supporting their growth both on and off the field.
Key Programmes for 2026
Several flagship programmes will be running throughout the year, each with a unique focus and approach to engaging young cricketers.
Wicketz Programme in Southampton
Funded by the Lord’s Taverners charity and delivered in Southampton, the Wicketz programme offers weekly cricket sessions, special events, and vibrant festivals at various school and community venues. Since its launch in 2018, the initiative has seen significant growth, engaging more than 250 young participants in 2025 alone.
One of the standout features of Wicketz is its innovative Glow in the Dark sessions. During these events, bats, balls, wickets, and even the players themselves are illuminated, creating a unique and exciting cricket experience that captivates young imaginations.
Chance to Shine Street in Portsmouth and Basingstoke
In collaboration with the Chance to Shine charity, Hampshire Cricket Board delivers the free-to-access Street programme in Portsmouth and Basingstoke. This initiative reached over 250 young people across these areas in 2025 and continues to expand.
The Street programme introduces a fast-paced, energetic style of cricket played with a tennis ball, making the game more accessible and dynamic. With seven free weekly sessions held across the county, all necessary kit is provided, ensuring there are no barriers to participation.
Annual Hawks Fest in August
Each August, the spotlight turns to the annual Hawks Fest, a showpiece festival that brings together participants from various urban cricket programmes. The event features multiple tournaments across different age categories, providing a competitive yet friendly platform for young cricketers.
Throughout the day, the festival also includes life-skill workshops and engaging activities delivered by organisations such as Sport in Mind, Solent Mind, Pompey in the Community, and Chase Cricket. Adding to the excitement, players from the Hampshire Men’s and Women’s teams are expected to make special appearances, joining in the activities and interacting directly with participants.
Expanding Access Beyond Urban Initiatives
The Hampshire Cricket Board’s commitment to making cricket accessible extends far beyond these urban programmes. A wide array of additional events and competitions are planned, including school tournaments and activations linked to major events like the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025. This diverse offering ensures there is truly something for every young person interested in the sport.
The board’s overarching mission remains clear: to break down barriers and make cricket a sport for everyone. By providing free, high-quality opportunities across Hampshire, they are nurturing the next generation of cricketers while building stronger, healthier communities through sport.
