Aimee Sell, a former England karate champion, recently spoke with Jo Bailey on Drive about her lifelong passion for the sport and her current role as a coach inspiring the next generation.
Remarkable Achievements
Many locals know Aimee as a karate instructor, but her own accomplishments are extraordinary. She represented England for nearly a decade, winning multiple national titles, as well as European and World Championship medals. Her first England appearance came at age 14 when she traveled to Morocco for the World Championships.
How It All Began
Aimee's interest in karate started thanks to her older brother, who originally took up the sport because he wanted to be a Power Ranger. A naturally competitive child, she soon discovered her talent, and karate quickly became a major part of her life.
Coaching Career
Her competitive career took her across Europe and beyond, but she is equally proud of her coaching work. Having previously served as an England coach, she is now back in a national coaching role, helping young athletes prepare for international competition. Closer to home, Aimee has launched her own academy and is expanding classes locally, including a new group in Ingatestone.
Academy Focus
The academy welcomes children from age four and focuses not only on karate skills but also on confidence, discipline, and resilience. Aimee emphasizes that karate is about much more than kicks and punches; it teaches life lessons that stay with people forever. Having been a nervous child herself when she started training, she understands the importance of helping young people build confidence at their own pace.
Rewarding Progress
Aimee spoke warmly about seeing children grow through the sport, whether they compete, make new friends, or simply become more confident. Watching that progress, she says, is one of the most rewarding parts of running her own academy.
