Accrington boxer Thomas Varey has won the Commonwealth International super lightweight title after defeating Welsh boxer Rashid Omar by a unanimous points decision in an eight-round bout at Bolton’s Toughsheet Stadium.
Varey, who trains at Blackpool’s Sharpstyle Gym under coach Andy Abrol, controlled the fight from the first meaningful attack. “Both boxers spent the first round weighing each other up and probing the opposition,” said Abrol. “The first meaningful attack from Thomas put Omar on the back foot, which is where he stayed throughout the fight.”
Dominant Performance and Late Knockdowns
Thomas proved himself too sharp and skilled for Omar, who had to concentrate on his defence throughout the bout. Varey upped the pace and pressure in the later rounds, sending his opponent to the canvas twice in the last round, when Omar was effectively saved by the bell. “We were delighted and proud to see Thomas have his hand raised as he picked up his first professional boxing title, which is evidence of a well-developed boxing IQ,” added Abrol.
Undefeated Record and Amateur Background
Varey, who turned 21 in April, is now undefeated in his 13 professional bouts since joining the paid ranks in 2023 at age 18. Four of those wins came by stoppage. He began boxing at age eight and enjoyed a distinguished amateur career, winning 50 of 55 amateur bouts. “My best achievement was a European amateur championship win. I’m also proud of winning four national titles and six box cup championships. Boxing has always been my top priority,” said Varey.
Self-Criticism and Future Plans
Despite the victory, Varey was critical of his performance. “This was my longest bout to date. I was a bit slow off the mark, to be truthful, and not sufficiently quick to implement Andy’s advice. However, I’m delighted to have won this title. I’m looking forward to defending it in September, probably in Blackpool at the Winter Gardens. When Andy thinks I’m ready and if an opportunity presents itself, I’ll be stepping up to 10-round bouts.”

Varey attended St Mary’s primary school in Oswaldtwistle and then Myerscough College. He is grateful to sponsors Nigel Waldie and 11.11 Management. Further potential sponsors should contact Andy Abrol by email at sharpstyleboxing@hotmail.co.uk or via Instagram @sharpstyle_boxing.
