Millwall Manager Alex Neil Voices Frustration Over EFL Fixture Arrangements
In the competitive world of the Championship, managers often find themselves at odds with fixture scheduling, and Millwall's Alex Neil is the latest to voice his discontent. Following a 2-1 home defeat to Norwich City on Bank Holiday Monday, Neil has criticized the EFL for what he perceives as an unfair setup ahead of Friday's trip to West Bromwich Albion.
Unfavorable Schedule Impacts Team Preparation
Neil highlighted that Millwall's remaining fixtures include three evening kick-offs in their final five games, with no 3pm starts. This schedule forces the team into back-to-back away trips to Stoke and Leicester, adding to the travel burden. He emphasized that playing before neighboring teams in the league table gives opponents an advantage, as they can adjust strategies based on Millwall's results.
Key Concerns Raised by Neil
- Reduced rest days due to a Friday fixture, impacting recovery time.
- Increased travel demands with two away games in one week.
- Potential competitive disadvantage from early kick-offs.
In a statement to the Southwark Press, Neil said, "I've voiced my opinion on it. In the next four games, we play before the teams immediately next to us in the league, so they know what our result was, which I don't think is helpful for anybody. Certainly not helpful for us." He added, "The fact that they've brought our other game forward onto the Friday means we get one less day's rest. Again, we need to travel twice in one week, and we're away twice. It's certainly not been in our favour, let's put it that way."
Historical Context of Fixture Complaints
This is not an isolated incident in the Championship. Earlier this season, West Brom's former manager Ryan Mason also criticized the EFL over fixture congestion, particularly regarding midweek away trips that seemed unevenly distributed among teams. Neil's comments echo a broader sentiment within the league about the need for more balanced scheduling to ensure fair competition.
As Millwall prepares for their clash at The Hawthorns, Neil's frustration underscores the ongoing challenges teams face with fixture logistics, which can significantly influence match outcomes and league standings.
