Aston Villa have officially confirmed their squad selection for the upcoming knockout rounds of the Europa League, with three notable first-team players omitted from the final list submitted to UEFA.
Squad Changes and Omissions
The club have utilised their permitted three alterations to the squad originally registered for the group stage. Departures during the winter transfer window and a long-term injury have necessitated these changes. Donyell Malen and Evann Guessand both left Villa Park in January, while Boubacar Kamara is sidelined for the remainder of the season due to injury, resulting in their exclusion from the European roster.
New Additions to the European Campaign
In their place, manager Unai Emery has brought in three experienced players to bolster the squad for the continental challenge. Striker Tammy Abraham, winger Leon Bailey, and midfielder Douglas Luiz have all been added to the List A squad, providing fresh options and depth as Villa aim to progress in the competition.
Understanding UEFA Squad Regulations
UEFA rules for the Europa League mandate that each 25-man List A squad must include four places reserved specifically for 'club-trained' players. Aston Villa currently do not have any senior players who meet this specific criterion, meaning those slots remain unfilled in their submission.
Young defender Lamare Bogarde, the only first-team player to have come through the club's academy, is named on the separate List B. This list is designated for youth players who remain eligible to feature in matches. Interestingly, January signing Alysson, despite being only 19 years old, does not qualify for List B. UEFA regulations require such players to have been registered with the club for an uninterrupted period of two years, a criterion the new arrival does not yet meet.
Notable Absence and Full Squad List
In a further squad decision, experienced midfielder Ross Barkley has also been left out of the European selection. The full confirmed List A squad for Aston Villa's Europa League knockout stage campaign is as follows:
Goalkeepers: Emi Martinez, Marco Bizot.
Defenders: Matty Cash, Victor Lindelof, Ezri Konsa, Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne, Pau Torres, Andres Garcia, Ian Maatsen.
Midfielders: John McGinn, Youri Tielemans, Jadon Sancho, Douglas Luiz, Amadou Onana.
Forwards: Harvey Elliott, Emi Bundia, Ollie Watkins, Morgan Rogers, Leon Bailey, Tammy Abraham.
The announcement sets the stage for Villa's crucial European fixtures, with the revised squad aiming to build on their group stage performance and make a significant impact in the knockout phase of the tournament.
