Transfer activity is heating up in the West Midlands as two Championship clubs, Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion, find themselves at the centre of January window speculation.
Birmingham City's Phil Neumann in Demand
Birmingham City's summer acquisition, German defender Phil Neumann, is reportedly the subject of significant interest from clubs in Europe's top divisions, potentially leading to a shock mid-season departure. Neumann, who arrived at St Andrew's on a free transfer from Hannover 96 just six months ago, has quickly established himself as a key figure in Chris Davies's defensive line.
Despite a brief spell on the bench between late September and mid-October, the 28-year-old centre-back has made 23 appearances for the Blues, primarily partnering Christoph Klarer. His contributions have been vital in Birmingham's push for consecutive promotions, even amidst a campaign marked by inconsistency.
European Clubs Circle for Defender
According to reports from Italy, specifically CalcioMercato, two clubs are actively pursuing Neumann. German Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, currently 12th and facing a relegation battle with only a five-point cushion above the drop zone, are keen. Their manager, Daniel Bauer, has strong Hannover connections, having both played and coached there, which is believed to give him familiarity with Neumann.
Simultaneously, Serie A strugglers Hellas Verona are also credited with interest. Verona sit 19th, dangerously close to relegation after seven seasons in Italy's top flight. They are four points from safety and possess the joint-worst defensive record in the league, having conceded 37 goals in 22 matches, making defensive reinforcements a clear priority.
West Bromwich Albion Target Honduran International
Across the West Midlands, West Bromwich Albion are reportedly making a push to sign Joseph Rosales, the 36-time capped Honduran international left-back currently with MLS side Austin FC. The link is facilitated by Albion head coach Eric Ramsay, who previously worked with Rosales during his tenure at Minnesota United before the defender's recent move to Austin.
A report from Honduran outlet Diez suggests Ramsay is eager to reunite with the player at The Hawthorns. However, a January transfer appears complicated, as Rosales only completed his switch to Austin FC at the start of this month, indicating a summer move might be a more plausible scenario.
Addressing the Left-Back Conundrum
West Brom's interest aligns with their need to bolster the left-back position. Summer signing Charlie Taylor was brought in to compete with Callum Styles, but tactical demands and an injury crisis have seen Taylor deployed as a makeshift centre-back and Styles utilised in midfield at times. Securing a specialist like Rosales could provide much-needed stability and depth in that defensive role as the Baggies continue their Championship campaign.
