Unai Emery Embraces Aston Villa's European Legacy Ahead of Bologna Clash
Emery Feels Responsibility of Villa's European History

Unai Emery Acknowledges Aston Villa's European Heritage

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has expressed a deep sense of responsibility to succeed in European competitions, drawing inspiration from the club's historic 1982 European Cup victory. This comes as Villa gear up for their Europa League quarter-final first-leg match against Bologna, set to take place in Italy.

Villa's Recent European Journey

In recent seasons, Aston Villa have demonstrated their prowess on the continental stage. They reached the semi-finals of the Conference League in 2024 and followed that with a quarter-final appearance in the Champions League last season. Emery highlighted that these achievements, coupled with the legacy of the 1982 triumph, create a compelling narrative for the current squad.

"Aston Villa's history is a massive history in a lot of things," Emery stated. "One remarkable moment was when Aston Villa won the European Cup. It is something that makes us responsible, and makes us feel that we are in a club that was successful in Europe."

Emery's Personal Reflections and Challenges

Reflecting on his own career, Emery noted his gratitude for the opportunities to compete for European titles across various competitions, including the Champions League and Conference League. He emphasized that each new season presents a unique challenge, with the goal of building upon past successes to forge a new chapter in Villa's storied history.

"Individually, I'm feeling comfortable during the years and thankful for the teams I was coaching with the possibility to win this title or in the Champions League or Conference League," he said. "Each moment is a different challenge. Everything we did before is done and to do it again is the challenge we have. Every day with the players and with Villa is to build something for the history of the club."

Previewing the Bologna Encounter

The upcoming match against Bologna marks the third meeting between the two sides in the last two seasons, with Aston Villa emerging victorious in both previous encounters. In September, John McGinn scored the sole goal in a 1-0 win for Villa. Since that defeat, Bologna have remained unbeaten in their 11 subsequent matches in the competition, showcasing their resilience and tactical discipline.

Emery provided insights into Bologna's playing style, describing them as "so, so intense and aggressive in their tactical idea, collectively getting a lot of duels." He assured that Villa have analyzed their past meetings to formulate a strategic gameplan for the upcoming clash.

"Those two matches we played in Villa Park, how we knew Bologna is the same," Emery explained. "How we play tomorrow will be more or less the same style. We've used our information from playing against them to try and understand how the match will go. Tomorrow we are ready, we are focused, trying to set our gameplan and trying to continue in our build, individually and collectively."

Injury Update on Jadon Sancho

In team news, Emery confirmed that winger Jadon Sancho will be unavailable for the trip to Italy due to an injury. However, he provided a positive update on Sancho's recovery timeline, indicating that the player is progressing well and could return to action within a short period.

"Sancho is not going to be out for a long time, but he's still out," Emery said. "Hopefully in a few days, maybe one or two weeks, he's coming back but he's progressing well."

As Aston Villa prepare for this crucial European fixture, Emery's words underscore the blend of historical pride and contemporary ambition driving the team forward. With the weight of past glories on their shoulders, Villa aim to navigate the challenges of the Europa League and add another memorable chapter to their European legacy.
