Unai Emery Highlights John McGinn's Role in Aston Villa's Champions League Push
Unai Emery has outlined how Aston Villa can secure a return to the Champions League, with captain John McGinn playing a pivotal role in the team's ambitions. The Villa manager expressed confidence that if McGinn maintains his recent goalscoring form, the club will achieve its European objectives.
McGinn's Impactful Return from Injury
John McGinn has made a stellar comeback after missing nearly two months due to a knee injury sustained in a 1-0 home defeat to Everton in January. Since returning, he has scored in consecutive matches against Lille and West Ham, helping Villa win three of their last four games following a slump of just one victory in seven across all competitions.
His goal against West Ham, a curling effort from the edge of the box assisted by Jadon Sancho and Matty Cash, secured successive home wins for Villa for the first time since early January. This strike contributed to Villa's impressive tally of 18 goals from outside the penalty area this season, the highest among Europe's top-five leagues. Only Ashley Young, with 12, has scored more Premier League goals from outside the box for Villa than McGinn's 11.
Emery's Numerical Challenge for McGinn
In his post-match press conference, Emery emphasized McGinn's importance, stating, "John McGinn, his challenge is to add numbers. Two years ago I told him at the beginning of the season, if you add numbers this season, 10 goals and 10 assists, we can achieve our objective." He added that this season follows a similar pattern, with McGinn's contributions helping Villa maintain their current position.
McGinn himself acknowledged this target after scoring against Lille, noting, "The manager touched on that a couple of seasons ago when we finished fourth that Douglas got 10 goals. That's been my aim for a few seasons." He expressed a desire to reach 10 goals this year to alleviate pressure on striker Ollie Watkins, who provided an assist in the West Ham match.
Versatility as a Strategic Asset
Emery also praised McGinn and teammate Morgan Rogers for their versatility, which he views as a key tactical weapon. "McGinn is versatile. He played fantastic on the left side during the season," Emery explained. He highlighted Rogers' ability to perform well in various positions, emphasizing that their adaptability and positive mentality are crucial for the team's success.
This strategic flexibility allows Villa to adjust formations and maintain performance levels, even when players are deployed in different roles. Emery's focus on numerical targets and player versatility underscores his methodical approach to guiding Aston Villa back into Champions League contention.
