Jadon Sancho's Transfer Stance Revealed as Aston Villa Weigh Permanent Deal
Jadon Sancho's loan spell at Aston Villa is set to conclude this summer, with the club still undecided on whether to pursue a permanent transfer from Manchester United. The winger, currently on loan at Villa Park, is said to be eager for a return to Borussia Dortmund and is reportedly willing to accept a salary reduction to facilitate the move if he becomes a free agent.
Sancho's Preference for Dortmund Return
According to reports from The Athletic, Sancho is keen on rejoining Borussia Dortmund for a third stint. He has previously made 158 appearances for the Bundesliga club across two separate periods, the most recent being at the end of the 2023/24 season. Sancho has not played for Manchester United since August 2023, having spent the last two campaigns on loan at Chelsea and Aston Villa.
Contract Situation and Villa's Decision
Sancho's contract at Manchester United expires at the end of the season, and although the club holds an option to extend it by an additional year, his five-year tenure in Manchester appears to be nearing its end. It remains uncertain whether Aston Villa will attempt to sign him permanently on a free transfer this summer.
The funds available to Villa manager Unai Emery for such a deal will depend on the club's final Premier League position and which European competition they qualify for. Last month, Emery commented on the possibility of making Sancho's move permanent, stating, "He will need another contract, and maybe it could be here. If he plays his best football, we will want him. But other teams could also be interested in him."
Dortmund's Tactical Shift and Other Interest
Borussia Dortmund had been briefly linked with Sancho last summer before his loan move to Aston Villa. The German club, under manager Niko Kovac, switched to a 3-4-2-1 formation this season, utilizing two attacking midfielders behind a lone striker. However, reports indicate that Dortmund plan to revert to a system based on wingers, which could create an opportunity for Sancho's return.
Beyond interest from Germany, Sancho is also attracting attention from clubs in Italy and Turkey, adding further complexity to his future. During his loan at Aston Villa, Sancho has contributed one goal and two assists, including a recent start in the 2-0 victory over Lille that helped Villa progress to the Europa League quarter-finals.
