Former West Brom Striker Jason Roberts Appointed to Club's Board

In a significant move for West Bromwich Albion, former striker Jason Roberts has been appointed as a non-executive director to the club's board. Roberts, 48, returns to The Hawthorns over two decades after his playing days, joining chairman and owner Shilen Patel, chief financial officer Ethan Gobetz, and executive director Mark Miles in the boardroom.

A Return to Albion Roots

Roberts spent three-and-a-half years as a player for the Baggies from the summer of 2000, when he was signed as a £2 million club-record transfer from Bristol Rovers, until his departure to Wigan Athletic in January 2004. During his tenure, he made 101 appearances and scored 27 goals, contributing to the club's promotion successes. His connection to Albion runs deep, as he is the nephew of the late legendary forward Cyrille Regis, further cementing his ties to the club's history.

Bringing Extensive Experience to the Table

In his new role, Roberts will not be involved in day-to-day operations but will focus on club strategy alongside fellow board members. He brings a wealth of experience from both English and international football. Currently, Roberts holds a full-time position as director of development at Concacaf, the governing body for football in North and Central America and the Caribbean. He also maintains boardroom roles with the Global Institute of Sport and works closely with the United Nations on the 'Football for Goals' initiative.

Roberts' Statement on the Appointment

Expressing his delight, Roberts said, "I am honoured to join the board of a club that holds such deep personal meaning for my family. This is a crucial moment for West Bromwich Albion, and I look forward to contributing to its strategic direction. Since retiring from playing, I have gained valuable board-level experience, and I am excited to apply that here." His relationship with owner Shilen Patel dates back to before Patel's 2024 takeover, when Roberts lived in Miami, and he has since attended recent matches, including games against Sheffield United and Southampton.

Community and Recognition

Beyond football, Roberts is known for his community work. He founded the Jason Roberts Foundation in 2007, which supports marginalised communities in the UK and Caribbean, and was awarded an MBE in 2010 for services to sport and community. His playing career also included stints at Portsmouth, Wigan, Blackburn Rovers, and Reading in the Premier League.

Owner's Perspective

Shilen Patel added, "Jason's lifelong journey with Albion continues as he joins our board. His experience as a footballer, executive, and someone who knows the club across generations will be invaluable. His enthusiasm for shaping the club's future has been evident from our first discussions, and I am thrilled to welcome him aboard." This appointment marks a strategic step for West Bromwich Albion as they plan for future growth and success.
