Former Birmingham City captain Michael Morrison has announced his retirement from professional football, bringing a two-decade career to a close. The 38-year-old centre-back played in all three EFL leagues and secured two promotions during his time in the game.
Career highlights
Morrison began and ended his career at Cambridge United, with spells at Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, and Birmingham City, where he spent the longest period. He made 183 appearances for Blues over five seasons, captaining the club through a turbulent era. After leaving in 2019, he played three Championship seasons at Reading, followed by stints at Portsmouth and Cambridge United.
Retirement announcement
Confirming his decision on social media, Morrison wrote: "After more than 20 years in the game and over 800 appearances, the time feels right to hang up my boots and bring my playing career to a close." He expressed gratitude to teammates, staff, and fans, noting: "One thing my career taught me, especially during the Covid years, was never to take supporters for granted. Playing in empty stadiums showed all of us just how much fans bring to the game."
Gratitude and legacy
Morrison thanked his family for their sacrifices, saying: "None of this would have been possible without my family. I owe so much to my parents and family for the sacrifices they made throughout the years." He concluded: "Football has given me more than I could ever have imagined, and I will always be thankful for that."
