Nathan Redmond Set for Birmingham City Reunion After Signing Championship Deal
Former Birmingham City winger Nathan Redmond has signed a short-term contract with Blackburn Rovers, subject to EFL and FA approval, setting up a potential emotional return to St Andrew's next week. The embattled Championship outfit confirmed the deal today, with Redmond hoping to feature in the final seven games of the season.
Key Matchup Against Former Club
Redmond could make his Blackburn debut at St Andrew's on Friday, April 3, when Rovers visit Birmingham City. While Blues have little riding on the game, it holds significant importance for both Redmond and Blackburn, who are battling relegation. Michael O'Neill's side currently sit 19th in the table, just four points above the drop zone.
Their challenging Easter schedule includes this visit to Blues, followed by a home match against relegation rivals West Brom on April 6. Blackburn will finish their campaign against Leicester City, who are currently 22nd in the standings.
Redmond's Birmingham City Legacy
Nathan Redmond came through the Birmingham City academy and became the club's second-youngest ever player when he made his debut against Rochdale in August 2010, aged just 16 years and 173 days. He went on to play 82 times for Blues, including appearances in the Europa League, before being sold to Norwich City in 2013.
Since then, Redmond has enjoyed a six-season stint in the Premier League with Southampton, followed by spells at Besiktas and Burnley. Released last summer, the 32-year-old signed a short-term deal with Sheffield Wednesday at the end of last year, playing 132 minutes across seven games for the Owls.
Recent Form and Future Prospects
Redmond has not played at St Andrew's since January 2015, when Norwich City drew 0-0 with Birmingham. His return could provide a boost for Blackburn as they fight to avoid relegation in the closing stages of the Championship season.
With play-off dreams seemingly dashed for both teams, this match offers Redmond a chance to reconnect with Blues fans and help his new club secure vital points in their survival bid.
