The Soloman Cutler on Broad Street has confirmed it is among the select few Wetherspoons pubs across the UK that will remain open until 5am to screen England's World Cup Round of 16 match against Mexico. This makes it the only Wetherspoons in Birmingham to do so.
Extended Opening Hours for World Cup
Pubs across the country have been given permission to stay open until 5am on Monday following England's victory over DR Congo. Initially, it seemed pubs would not be allowed to keep their doors open through the early hours, but Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced emergency powers allowing extended hours.
England's match against Mexico kicks off at 1am on Monday, July 6, 2026, due to the game being played at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where the local time is 6pm on Sunday, July 5.
Only Five Wetherspoons Nationwide
Surprisingly, only five Wetherspoons across the UK will remain open until 5am. Besides The Soloman Cutler in Birmingham, the others are The Bishop's Mill in Durham, The Cooper Rose in Sunderland, the William Rufus in Carlisle, and Penderel’s Oak in Holborn.
Making the announcement about the extended opening hours, Keir Starmer said: "Football might be coming home, but we're making sure fans don't have to. Pubs staying open till the final whistle is good news for supporters and good news for the pubs and venues that bring our communities together."
Impact for Fans
This decision allows fans to watch the match in a social setting despite the late kick-off time. The Soloman Cutler is expected to draw crowds from across Birmingham, offering a place for supporters to gather and enjoy the game.
