Aston Villa Linked with Cagliari Goalkeeper Elia Caprile
Italian media reports indicate that Aston Villa are closely monitoring Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile as uncertainty surrounds the future of current number one Emi Martinez. According to Italian website CalcioCasteddu, both Villa and Tottenham Hotspur have expressed interest in the 24-year-old shot-stopper, who is in his second season with the Sardinian club.
Martinez Transfer Speculation Intensifies
This development comes amid renewed speculation about Martinez's potential departure from Villa Park. Recent reports have linked the Argentine international with a summer move to Italian giants Juventus, creating significant uncertainty about Villa's goalkeeping situation for the upcoming season. Villa faced similar concerns last summer when Martinez was linked with a move away from the club, prompting them to explore alternative options at that time.
Caprile's Career Journey
Elia Caprile represents a relatively new name in the transfer conversation, though he may be familiar to some English football fans. The Italian goalkeeper previously spent time at Leeds United after being brought to the club by then-manager Marcelo Bielsa from Chievo in 2019. Despite arriving as an 18-year-old prospect, Caprile never made a first-team appearance for Leeds before returning to Italy to continue his development.
Since returning to his homeland, Caprile has begun to fulfill his potential. After a move from Napoli to Cagliari in 2025, he has established himself as a regular starter in Serie A, making 75 appearances in Italy's top division. This season alone, he has featured in 30 league matches and is the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper for a Cagliari side currently positioned 15th in the Serie A table.
International Recognition and Agent Comments
Caprile's consistent performances have put him in contention for a call-up to the Italian national team, further enhancing his reputation across European football. His agent, Graziano Battistini, has acknowledged the growing interest in his client while urging caution about any immediate transfer discussions.
Speaking on Stile TV, Battistini emphasized: "I would focus only on the present because right now Elia must continue to play his part in the league so that Cagliari can achieve its goals. It's true that the boy is being monitored by higher-level clubs. But being monitored is one thing, discussing and closing the deal is another."
Villa's Goalkeeping Situation
Aston Villa are expected to be linked with numerous goalkeepers throughout the summer transfer window as they prepare for the possibility of Martinez's departure. The Argentine has been a crucial figure for Villa since joining the club, and his potential exit would create a significant void between the posts that manager Unai Emery would need to address.
Caprile represents an intriguing option for Villa, combining youth with growing Serie A experience and the potential for further development. His previous stint in England, though unsuccessful in terms of first-team opportunities, means he has some familiarity with English football culture and could potentially adapt more quickly than other overseas options.
