Aston Villa's Sil Swinkels Completes Permanent Transfer to Sheffield Wednesday
Villa's Swinkels Joins Sheffield Wednesday Permanently

Aston Villa have confirmed the departure of young defender Sil Swinkels, who has completed a move to Sheffield Wednesday. The 22-year-old centre-back joins the League One side on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee, ending a relationship that began in 2020 when he signed from Vitesse Arnhem.

Limited First-Team Opportunities at Villa

Swinkels made two first-team appearances for Villa but never featured in a Premier League match. He progressed through the ranks at Bodymoor Heath and gained valuable experience through loan spells with Bristol Rovers, Exeter City, and most recently Chesterfield last season.

Player's Ambition and Club's Vision

Speaking to the Sheffield Wednesday website, Swinkels expressed his excitement about the move: "The project brought me here. The people here made me feel like it’s a long-term vision and that’s something I want to be a part of. We all know the ambition and where the club want to go." He added, "At a club like Sheffield Wednesday, it’s natural that you're going to have competition for places – it's a healthy environment and I'm looking forward to it. I'm very happy to get this over the line."

Sporting Director's Praise

Sheffield Wednesday sporting director Simon Wilson highlighted Swinkels' potential: "Sil is a player we are excited to bring to Sheffield Wednesday. He gives us natural balance as a left-footed, left-sided central defender, alongside strong physical attributes and the ability to progress the ball effectively." Wilson noted his impressive loan spell at Chesterfield, where he "made a real breakthrough and played every available minute over the second half of the season." He concluded, "At 22, he has strong foundations but still significant room for development, and we believe he will benefit greatly from the environment we are building."

Career Progression

The transfer marks a significant step for Swinkels, who will now aim to establish himself in the first team at Hillsborough. His departure from Villa continues the club's policy of allowing young players to move on for regular game time.
