Telford Karate Coach Jailed for Indecent Assault on Boys

Tony Castle, a former karate coach from Telford, has been sentenced to seven years in prison after admitting 10 counts of indecent assault against two boys, with offences spanning from 1987 to 2002. The 67-year-old, currently an inmate at HMP Whatton in Nottinghamshire, appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court on Wednesday, June 17, where the court heard how he had exploited his role to inflict years of sexual abuse.

Abuse of Trust Over Decades

Castle's victims included a boy who was part of his karate club in Telford. West Mercia Police stated that Castle had repeatedly abused his position of trust as a karate instructor to sexually abuse this victim. The second victim, who was not associated with the club, was assaulted at various locations over four years. The abuse only came to light when both victims reported the offences to police in 2024.

Detective Constable Jake Garratt, from Shropshire’s Reactive CID, said: “This sentence reflects the serious and lasting harm caused by Castle’s offending. He repeatedly abused his position of trust as a karate instructor and friend over many years to target and exploit young children, and it is right that he has now been held further accountable.”

Concurrent Sentences and Previous Convictions

The seven-year sentence handed down by the court will run concurrently with a 10-year sentence Castle received in 2024 for non-recent child sex abuse. He also received a similar 10-year sentence in 2011 for related offences. The cumulative effect of these sentences ensures Castle remains behind bars for a significant period.

Police Praise Victims' Courage

Detective Constable Garratt commended the victims for coming forward despite the significant passage of time, stating: “I would like to commend the courage of the victims in coming forward, particularly given the significant passage of time, as their bravery has ensured a dangerous offender faces additional justice.” He added that West Mercia Police remain committed to supporting survivors and will always take reports of abuse seriously, regardless of when the offences occurred.

How to Report Sexual Offences

West Mercia Police encourage anyone who has experienced sexual abuse to come forward. Reports can be made through a dedicated section on the force's website. Alternatively, information can be shared anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
