Young footballers in West Bridgford are kicking off on a brand-new, high-quality playing surface, thanks to a significant council investment in local facilities.
Major Investment in Community Sports
Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) has completed a £44,000 refurbishment of the football pitch at Greythorn Park. This project forms part of a broader commitment, with the Council having invested more than £1 million across its parks and open spaces in the last two years alone.
The new installation replaces the previous astro turf pitch, which had served the community since the early 2000s. The upgrade provides a safe, durable, and all-weather surface, designed to encourage physical activity throughout the year, directly supporting children's fitness and overall wellbeing.
Fostering Inclusive Play and Community Health
A key goal of the new pitch is to promote inclusive play, attracting a diverse range of ages and abilities. This initiative builds on the adjacent refurbishment of the larger Greythorn Park play area completed last year, creating a cohesive hub for community engagement.
By enhancing access to quality facilities, the Council aims to create spaces where young people can develop skills, build confidence, and enjoy the positive social benefits of team sports. The project is a direct step towards promoting healthier lifestyles across Rushcliffe.
School and Council Leaders Welcome the Upgrade
Pupils at the neighbouring Greythorn Primary School are already among the first to benefit, with dozens using the pitch for games before and after school.
The school's Headteacher, Tae Carpenter, expressed strong support for the project: "This is a really welcome refurbishment so close to the school. So many of our pupils love a game of football, and I am sure it will provide thousands of hours of fun for many of them in the years ahead."
Mr. Carpenter added, "We always want to provide children as many sport, health and wellbeing opportunities as possible, and a facility next to their school can only increase healthy habits. Thank you to Rushcliffe Borough Council for this investment."
Councillor Jonathan Wheeler, RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Wellbeing and ICT, also commented: "This is another great local facility that gives children access to a safe all-weather pitch all year round. Anything that can improve youngsters’ wellbeing and interest in sport should be encouraged."
He confirmed the Council's ongoing strategy, stating, "In line with our Play Strategy, we will continue to assess where we can invest in sites we own and help other local councils and partners to make improvements wherever they can. We know how much our residents benefit from the ongoing upgrades and really value these facilities."
The new pitch at Greythorn Park in West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire, stands as a clear example of local authority investment directly enhancing community infrastructure and supporting the next generation's health and social development.
