Aston Villa defender Pau Torres has confirmed his intention to leave the club on a free transfer when his contract expires in 2028. The Spanish centre-back, who turns 30 in January, hopes to return to his hometown club Villarreal without costing them a transfer fee.
Torres Outlines His Plan
Speaking on the La Otra Grada podcast, Torres stated: "If nothing goes wrong along the way, I think I'll see out the two years remaining on my contract, and that will mark the end of my time at Aston Villa." He added: "What I'd like is for Villarreal not to have to pay anything for me. For me to join as a free agent. It's the club of my life and I don't want them to spend money on signing me."
Villa Career and Achievements
Torres joined Aston Villa from Villarreal in the summer of 2023, reuniting with manager Unai Emery. The pair previously won the Europa League together with Villarreal in 2021. Torres also lifted the trophy again two months ago as Villa defeated SC Freiburg 3-0 in Istanbul. He has made 109 appearances for Villa across all competitions and will feature in the Champions League next season.
Impact on Villa
Torres has played a key role in Villa's success under Emery. His departure as a free agent would represent a significant loss for the club, which could have otherwise received a transfer fee. However, his commitment to seeing out his contract ensures Villa retains his services for the next two seasons.
