Widnes Wasps Running Club Receives Boost from Redrow for Leadership Development
The Widnes Wasps ladies running club has received a significant boost through a donation from Redrow, which will fund a leadership course for three of its members. This initiative aims to strengthen the club's ability to provide high-quality training and support for female runners across the region.
Empowering Women Through Running for Nearly Four Decades
For nearly 40 years, the Widnes Wasps have been inspiring women to lace up their running shoes and explore streets and trails. The club prides itself on welcoming runners of all abilities, offering a safe and friendly environment where members can progress under the guidance of experienced runners. With over 35 current members, the group continues to encourage more women to join, regardless of size, shape, age, ability, or background, promoting both recreational and competitive running.
Funding for UK Athletics Leadership Training
The club applied to Redrow's Widnes community fund, linked to its Oak Brook Manor and Mill Green Meadows developments, to cover the costs of the UK Athletics Leadership in Running Fitness (LiRF) training course. This program combines online learning with remote practical and virtual classroom sessions, equipping run leaders with the skills to:
- Identify participant needs and create inclusive plans for all abilities.
- Lead safe and structured sessions that enable members to progress.
- Enhance the overall running experience and support general health and fitness improvements.
Once qualified, these leaders will help deliver twice-weekly training sessions, fostering a more supportive and effective club environment.
Community Impact and Future Goals
Julie Moses, treasurer and membership secretary of the Widnes Wasps, expressed enthusiasm about the donation, stating: "We hope that through training more leaders, we will attract more members and thus help more women to reach their potential. We currently have over 35 members, but we will always encourage more women into running to enjoy recreational and competitive activities." The club meets in Widnes and draws members from surrounding areas such as Runcorn, Warrington, St Helens, Prescot, and Rainhill, highlighting its regional appeal.
Amanda Jones, head of sales at Redrow NW, commented on the support: "We're proud to back a group that invests so much in developing confident, inclusive run leaders to provide safe and welcoming sessions. It's great that our donation will help them continue building a community where everyone feels encouraged to take part." This funding underscores Redrow's commitment to local initiatives that promote health, fitness, and community engagement.
