The former midfielder enjoyed a distinguished playing career with clubs including Werder Bremen, Atletico Madrid, and Hamburg, making over 350 professional appearances before retiring in 2008. His coaching journey began with academy roles at FC Thun, Servette, and FC Basel before progressing to senior management positions.

Middlesbrough aren't the first Championship club to show interest in Wicky. West Bromwich Albion considered him for their managerial vacancy earlier this year before ultimately appointing Ryan Mason from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Baggies handed Mason a three-year contract until 2028, and he currently has the team sitting 14th in the Championship table after 15 fixtures. They're positioned just four points off the play-off places following their recent 2-1 victory over Oxford United.
