Arik Air Flight Makes Emergency Diversion Following Engine Explosion
Passengers aboard an Arik Air flight were left stunned by a loud bang as a major malfunction caused the aircraft's engine to tear open mid-air. The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, February 11, when flight W3740 departed from Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, Nigeria.
Emergency Protocols Activated After Loud Bang
The Boeing 737 was en route to Port Harcourt when the crew detected abnormal indications from one of the engines. Following a loud bang that rocked the cabin, the flight crew immediately followed standard emergency procedures. This included a precautionary shutdown of the left engine, which had suffered significant damage.
Dramatic images reveal the engine's outer casing completely ripped away, exposing internal wiring, pipes, and mechanical components. The plane, carrying 80 passengers, was forced to make an emergency diversion to Benin Airport, the closest suitable landing site.
Safe Landing and Investigation Launched
The aircraft touched down safely at Benin Airport at approximately 10:30 AM local time. All passengers and crew disembarked normally, with no injuries reported. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the engine failure.
Mrs Bimbo Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, stated: "During the cruise phase of flight, the crew detected abnormal indications on one of the engines. In accordance with established safety procedures, the flight crew conducted a precautionary engine shutdown and diverted to the nearest suitable airport, Benin."
Airline Response and Passenger Care
Arik Air issued a statement apologizing for the disruption and confirming that arrangements have been made to transport affected passengers to their final destination. The airline emphasized that passenger safety and well-being remain their top priority.
