Jet2 Issues Travel Alert Over Barcelona Rail Strike Disruption

The airline Jet2 has issued a formal travel alert for passengers due to planned rail strikes in the Catalonia region of Spain, which could significantly impact transport services to and from Barcelona Airport.

Strike Details and Impact on Travel

The strikes, organized by the Spanish Union of Train Drivers and Assistants (SEMAF), are scheduled to take place from March 2 to March 4. The industrial action involves drivers from Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC) and is centered on demands for improved safety measures on the rail service.

As a result, Jet2 has urged travelers on flight-only or Jet2CityBreaks bookings who are arranging their own transport to Barcelona Airport to allow extra time for their journeys. The airline emphasized that check-in for all its flights closes 40 minutes before departure, making punctuality crucial.

Previous Strikes and Current Service Levels

This is not the first instance of such disruptions in the region. Similar strikes occurred on February 24 and 25, during which the Department of Business and Labor mandated minimum service levels of 50% during peak hours and 25% at other times.

For the current strike period, authorities have increased coverage slightly, with trains expected to operate at 66% of capacity during peak travel times. Outside of peak hours, passengers should anticipate only 33% of the usual scheduled services being available.

Recommendations for Affected Travelers

Jet2 advises passengers to monitor updates on its travel information website for the latest developments. Additionally, travelers planning their journeys are encouraged to check the FGC page on social media platform X, where schedule changes and service adjustments are being shared in real-time.

Recent updates indicate that the Barcelona Valles line is currently running a regular service, while the Llobregat Anoia line is operating on a reinforced schedule with additional trains on line L8.

With Barcelona expected to be particularly busy this week, the combination of strike action and high passenger volumes could lead to extended travel times and potential delays. Passengers are strongly recommended to plan ahead and consider alternative transport options if necessary to ensure they arrive at the airport with sufficient time before their flights.
