Birmingham Bus Fare Dodgers Face Major Penalty Hike on National Express Services

The region's largest bus operator has announced a substantial increase in penalty charges for passengers caught travelling without a valid ticket. National Express West Midlands, which operates more than 90 percent of buses in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands, is implementing the new measures to combat fare evasion.

Increased Penalties and Enforcement

From Monday, April 20, anyone found without a valid ticket will face a £100 penalty charge. This represents an increase of almost 50 percent from the current £70 charge. The company has stated that this adjustment aims to align its penalty system with other transport operators in the region.

Jacques Le Gall, senior commercial manager at National Express West Midlands, emphasized the seriousness of fare evasion. "While the vast majority of our customers pay their way, there is a small minority of people who think the rules don’t apply to them," he said. "Our passengers feel it is unfair when people use bus services without paying."

Potential Court Prosecution and Fines

Passengers attempting to avoid payment could also face prosecution. If found guilty in court, individuals may be charged up to 10 times the new penalty amount, resulting in a fine of £1,000. This severe financial consequence is intended to serve as a stronger deterrent against fare dodging.

Le Gall highlighted the importance of using proper payment methods. "The easiest way to buy a ticket is with Tap & Cap. Simply tap the card reader with your contactless bank card and we will cap your fare so you don’t pay more than you should," he explained. "It’s far cheaper than being caught or ending up in court."

Impact on Services and Revenue

Fare evasion has been identified as a significant issue impacting both revenue and the quality of services provided. The clampdown on fare dodgers is part of broader efforts to ensure fair usage and maintain operational standards. National Express hopes that the increased penalties will reduce instances of non-payment and support sustainable service delivery.

The company urges all customers to take note of the higher penalties and ensure they have a valid ticket for their journey. There is no excuse for free loading and it won’t be tolerated, Le Gall concluded, reinforcing the company's commitment to enforcing fare regulations.
