Birmingham Bus Route Forced to Divert After Anti-Social Behaviour Incidents

A section of the popular National Express West Midlands number 95 bus service was temporarily pulled from its normal route due to recurring anti-social behaviour targeting buses. The diversion occurred on Wednesday evening, April 8, affecting journeys in the Shard End area of Birmingham.

Service Disruption and Safety Concerns

The number 95 route was unable to pick up passengers between Longmeadow Crescent and Fordbridge Road in Shard End after thugs targeted buses. National Express West Midlands described the issues as "recurring" and emphasized that such behaviour puts both passengers and staff at significant risk.

A company spokesperson stated: "This type of behaviour is very dangerous and totally unacceptable. It puts our colleagues and passengers at risk and means customers can't use a bus while we're repairing the damage to our vehicles."

Route Details and Alternative Arrangements

The number 95 service links Birmingham's Priory Queensway to Chelmsley Wood Interchange, passing through several key areas including:

  • Saltley
  • Washwood Heath
  • Ward End
  • Hodge Hill
  • Shard End
  • Kingshurst

During the disruption, affected journeys were diverted via Chester Road and Cooks Lane before the service was reinstated to its normal route. The bus company confirmed that while the number 95 service is now operating on its normal line of route, some journeys required diversion due to the ongoing safety concerns.

Company Response and Safety Measures

National Express West Midlands has implemented safety protocols in response to these incidents. The spokesperson explained: "We work very closely with the Safer Travel police to identify those involved and bring them to justice. We may divert or terminate services early at short notice if it becomes necessary to protect the safety of our customers and our drivers."

The company advises customers to check their official social media channels, particularly x.com/nxwestmidlands, for up-to-date information on any service changes throughout the day. This proactive approach aims to minimize disruption while prioritizing passenger and driver safety.

This incident highlights the challenges public transport operators face in maintaining service reliability while ensuring safety for all users. The recurring nature of these anti-social behaviour incidents in the Shard End area has prompted both operational adjustments and increased collaboration with law enforcement agencies.
