Birmingham's Bullring shopping centre was evacuated on Monday afternoon after a fire alarm was triggered, causing shoppers to be led out of the building and the centre to temporarily close.
Evacuation Details
The alarm sounded at around 2:30 pm, prompting a full evacuation of the popular shopping destination. Witnesses reported seeing crowds of people leaving the centre through various exits, with security personnel guiding them to safety.
Response from Authorities
West Midlands Fire Service confirmed they attended the scene but stated that the alarm was a false alarm. A spokesperson said: "We were called to the Bullring shopping centre following reports of a fire alarm activation. Upon arrival, we conducted a thorough investigation and found no evidence of a fire. The alarm was caused by a system fault."
The centre was reopened shortly after 3:00 pm once the issue was resolved and the building was declared safe.
Shopper Experiences
Shoppers described the evacuation as calm and orderly. One shopper said: "We heard the alarm and saw everyone heading for the exits. Staff were helpful and directed us out quickly. It was a bit chaotic but handled well."
The Bullring management apologized for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their cooperation. A statement read: "We can confirm that the Bullring was evacuated earlier today due to a fire alarm activation. The alarm was triggered by a fault in the system, and there was no fire. We apologize for any disruption caused and appreciate the patience of our visitors."
The incident caused minor disruption to the surrounding area, with some roads temporarily closed to allow emergency vehicles access. Normal service resumed shortly after the centre reopened.
