Royal Mail Disruption Alert: West Midlands Post Delays After Bank Holiday
Royal Mail Disruption: West Midlands Post Delays

Royal Mail has issued a disruption alert for several postcode areas across the UK, with the West Midlands experiencing notable delays. The postal service confirmed that certain regions, including parts of Kidderminster, are affected by late deliveries.

Bank Holiday Impact

The delays follow the Early May Bank Holiday on Monday, May 4, when Royal Mail suspended all deliveries and collections. Services resumed on Tuesday, May 5, but as of Thursday, May 7, some areas continue to face backlogs.

Royal Mail Statement

Royal Mail stated: "We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors." The company added that it is rotating deliveries to minimise inconvenience and providing targeted support to affected offices.

"We're sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding," the statement concluded.

Affected Postcodes

The disruptions are specifically impacting the following delivery offices:

  • Alfreton DO (DE55)
  • Kidderminster DO (DY10, DY11, DY12, DY14)
  • New Ferry DO (CH32, CH62, CH63)
  • Upton DO (CH30, CH49)

Royal Mail noted that its air and road networks have been operating normally over the past 24 hours.

Future Improvements

Last month, Royal Mail pledged to meet its letter delivery targets by May 2027 as part of a £500 million investment plan. This follows a £21 million fine from Ofcom in October for failing to meet standards, after delivering only 77% of First Class and 92.5% of Second Class post on time in 2024-25.

From April 1, Ofcom reduced delivery requirements: First Class post must now arrive the next day for 90% of items (down from 93%), and Second Class within three days for 95% (down from 98.5%). The changes also include scrapping Saturday Second Class deliveries in favour of alternating weekdays.

Royal Mail aims to improve First Class Next Day delivery to approximately 85% within nine months, reaching the 90% target within a year. For Second Class, it commits to delivering 93% within three days over nine months, and hitting the 95% target by May next year.
